Can Oil based poly go over water based?

Probably a stupid question, but I used a friend's Wagner HVLP with some General Finishes water poly, and I got a lot of overspray on the project I was woorking on. I'd like to lightly sand out the overspray with a sanding sponge and do a coat or two or wipe on to leave a final gloss layer. Will that work, or will the oil-based not play well with the water based?

    Thanks!

You can probably do it, but only after the water-based poly has completely cured (which, depending on various factors, can take a month or more). Then you can rough up the surface with fine sandpaper and apply the oil poly. I think you'll have a better chance of success going this direction (oil over water) than you would if it were reversed (water over oil).
