As I mentioned in the "internetlumber.com" thread I started earlier, after a suggestion (a pointer at least) by a forum member I contacted M&G Sawmill in Huntsville and scheduled a visit.
The mill is almost exactly 200 miles from my house so my buddy and I struck out at 7AM this morning for a "road trip" to the mill. The drive was scenic thru the hills of South Central Texas and into the plains towards East Texas and finally into the more forested area than what we have around San Antonio near Huntsville. Finding the mill was a bit of a struggle, the dirt road off of the highway is minuscule and barely marked, but ultimately located and we arrived.
M&G Sawmill is really a neat place. Very well kept grounds in a bit of a "rural residential" area.
Michael uses a Woodmizer 50hp diesel bandsaw that is a monster! We didn't see the saw in action but just looking at it made my mouth water.
Michael has a LOT of good looking lumber ... after looking over 4x4 and 6x4 QS and Rift sawn white oak I settled on 100bf of 4x4 rift sawn 8' 4" - 8" beauties that will I think look really great as a crib/bed. I also bought about 30bf of 8' 4x4 aromatic cedar to build my grandson a toychest.
Besides the white oak and cedar they specialize in mesquite ... and as you can see in the pic it is gorgeous ... they manufacture and sell wood flooring as well as mantles. They ship nation wide ... give them a look.
We loaded up the truck and headed home.
I can recommend M&G as a nice place to do business, friendly and knowledgeable folks and fair prices with good selection.
Including the $90 for gas round trip I spent about $400 got hand picked quality wood and was happy with the purchase.
