    Satin poly over high-gloss poly

Is there any reason I couldn't do the first couple of coats on a project (white oak) with regular high-gloss poly and then do the last couple of coats with satin poly? I have some high-gloss that needs to be used up but I don't want the super-shine look it gives. I will be sanding with 220 grit between coats.

You should have no problem doing that. Just allow each coat to cure.

Your idea is actually a suggested technique. It is thought to provide a look with more depth than if you had used satin alone.

I just saw an episode of "Ask This Old House" last weekend where Tom Silva helped a woman refinish her floor. He put 2 coats of high gloss poly on first then one coat of satin finish. He said the high gloss has a harder finish (for wear & tear) & whatever you put on last will be the finish you want see. Like wise for letting the finish cure between applications.

So my desire to be cheap turns out to be a recommended technique. I will have to point this out to the boss. Thanks folks.
