    Attention Foofprintsinconc.. Table top fasterner!

I gave my word I would get a picture or two of the Z style (what I call them anyway) top fasteners since you didn't quite understand on the PM explanations. I am having to start to thread to get the pictures on as I don't have a clue how to do them over e-mail.

The tabs attach to top on one end and fit in a slot on the main carcass on the other. But.. they are not put to the bottom of that slot to allow movement across the grain. And I physically attach the center of the top lenghwise to a underneath support to keep it from cuppiong up. By doing so.. that forces the top to expand side to side and that's why you don't seat them all the way in. It must move.. you are just controlling the movement with this method.

Hope that is all clear.. if not I am sure someone can assist as you probably won't see me around too much anymore. So... there you go and good luck with your progression in this craft. I've enjoyed assisting on the several occasions you have e-mailed or PM'ed.

Good luck Omar and best regards....

I have used these before, there is also a similar wooden variety. Figure 8s also work.

I usually use figure 8s, just seems a little sturdier to me, not sure why....

thanks sarge for posting those pics. a picture sure is worth a 1000 words. i have seen a similar detail in fww mag a while back, but they made their own wooded tabs. i was leery of the wooded tabs (the part that goes into the slot, which was about 3/16") would break. the metal ones would be stronger.

        thanks once again.

My brother has a coffee table I made him 5 years ago. I made my own wood clips and they haven't broken yet. A good hardwood should be plenty strong. The force to break them would be if you tried to pry the top off the table.

I was checking loose ends Omar and saw your post... Crockett is correct that hard-wood will work just fine. I used them for 35 years and just in the last 3 projects tried the Z's as I stay extremely busy and it saves time to get the store bought. I used to make about 50 clips a time so I would not have to stop and do them as all would be used.

The Z's.. figure 8's.. hard-wood tabs will all work fine. They are just different approached to reach the same end result. In other words.. more than one way to skin a cat.

Now... a new project has to get started around 2 PM. I sat up here for about 2 days and I'm going nuts as I can't stand sitting idle so... off to where the stairs lead at my house.. At this point.. 4 more on the burner simmering already and time doesn't wait on an ole man.

            Regards...
