I'm looking for ideas for a Benchtop drill press stand. I'd like it mobile with a couple of drawers and a bottom cabinet to house my hitachi pancake compressor - That probably locks my design down pretty well, but I wanted to see what ideas others have used.

How about making a mobile base out of plywood and some casters. Mount an old two drawer filing cabinet on the mobile base and remove the drawers. Put the compressor in the space that the drawers occupied and bolt the drill press to the top of the filing cabinet. In the open space above the compressor you could make and install a couple of simple pull out shelves. Or, you could just forget about the filing cabinet altogether and just make yourself a box carcass big enough to fit the compressor and a couple of drawers/shelves and set/bolt the DP to the top.Last edited by sweensdv; 04-25-2008, 03:59 PM._________________________

I used a very basic kitchen/utility cabinet that HD was clearing out a few months ago. I added a piece of plywood to the bottom to attach casters to. 5/8 piece of ply to the top which allowed me to mount the DP. Thanks JR, I looked for Rod Kirby's but only found his floor press version.
Pappy, I think you hit the nail on the head. Lot's more storage space than my original thoughts and I like the wings.
Has anyone had any problems with stability? The Shopnotes design has a "sandbox" in the base. The compressor should keep the CG low though.Comment

Almost exactly what I did. Cept I got my cabinet on clearance at Lowes. And it was a bathroom vanity cabinet. And I used 2x4's to create mounting points for the casters. I had to attach a back to it (used mdf). And I used a "scrap" countertop to make the DP mount.
Very happy with it. I like the sandbox idea to lower the CG though. Might have to borrow that.-John
