Looks like a fairly simple construction. 1/4 and 1/2" MDF should work well and it will take a good paint finish. Glue and pins should hold it together with maybe a rabbet and stopped dadoes for the shelf bottoms.Jon

I would also grab a tape measure and hit your local library. I am sure they would be happy to see someone getting kids to read.
Otherwise, I do agree, the ones I have seen are more of a magazine display rack. She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.Comment

You could also try something like this using 3/8" and 1/2" for the back supports and shelves, as someone else said. Figure the books as 9" x 12" x 1" thick, decide how many books you want in the unit and size accordingly. I would use 3/4" for the sides and front toe kick and assemble with glue and pin nails. Make sure to run a round over bit on all accessible MDF edges. I worked in a bookstore MANY moons ago and remember having shelves just like this, but made of plywood since MDF
didn't exist then.

This type of display can be made easily. Start by using plain brown wrapping paper that is sold in rolls, like postal wrap, it's cheap.
Cut off a piece large enough to draw the side view of the rack full size. What's so simple is that each level can be made separately as a back and bottom edge like an "L". Draw on the paper the shape of the end, and the shape of the "L's". They will attach at a slight angle tilted back.
When the "L's" are assembled, attach them to the ends. A bottom front fascia trim can then be added.
