    Veneer fun

Got to do some veneering today, walnut. Used glycerin and water to soften the veneers, took about a week. Used the sunday paper between sheets and clamped the stack down to the assembly table. Changed the paper each night. Worked great.

This is the first that I've used my new press, a commercial one vac-u-press compact 100. About 330$ total cost.

    Here's the press in action.

It's a 4'x4' poly bag, and here's the little pump. Surprisingly small but effective.

And finally, the results. This is quarter matched walnut burl veneer that I got from Rockler on close out at 5$ a flitch, backed with some slightly curly walnut veneer also from that sale. A lot of cutting with the veneer saw, and some learning curve. I used titebond cold press veneer glue, and the first panel I was a little heavy on the glue. Had a decent amount of bleed through, hard to totally avoid with burl veneer, but the second panel went much better. Almost no bleed through, just needed to tune in how much glue to use.

There are 2 panels there, they are going into frame and panel doors. I had to quarter match the veneer, as this flitch was pretty small. Not the best results, but not bad either. I need to get a bit of filler colored into 2 or 3 small holes in the veneer, and I'll be ready to go.

Looks good Keith. Sure beats parking the car on top. You got some nice results. I've always thought that learning curves are either fast or expensive.

They look great, Keith! I'm really envious of your vac setup.

Thanks guys Just_Started, it'll pull up to 1750 lbs per square foot, or 25HG, though in my atmosphere it's pulling between 22-23. It really is quite quiet, I was surprised at how little sound it gives off. It's a continuous run pump, and I don't feel that it needs to be, as the bag doesn't loose vac very quickly. I might set it up on a timer or something, have it run for the first hour or so.

Another one looking forward to seeing what those panels are used with. They might be enough motivation to get me off top dead center and put the press that I bought two months ago to use.

Did you buy the vacuum pump separately or did it all come as a kit? I have been looking for one, but they all seem to cost more than I want to spend so if you know anyplace to get a decent one cheap I would love to know.

Sorry that I didn't reply earlier, but I've been out of town all week. I bought the press as a kit from Rockler. It was 330$ as I recall. It was 380$ in the catalog, but rang up at 330$, so I didn't complain.

Since it's not technically a power tool, this would qualify for the 20% off coupon I think. That'd make it $304...
