Flexible trim?

I recently finished a corner shelf for a customer and tried to find flexible trim to finish the job.

How difficult could that be? Tom Silva and Nahm seem to find it easily.

Many phone calls, and quizzical looks from my city desk guys, led me to try the Internets', but I wanted to get the job done.

I'd seen electricians bend 3" pvc pipe using a hot box, so I decided to try bending some pvc trim.

I built a jig from scrap MDF and heated the trim in LOML's oven at 200 degrees for about 8 minutes. Worked great. The stuff gets pretty soft so don't pinch it too hard.

Great idea!

Azek advertises that as one of the features of their PVC exterior trim. I don't think they offer much interior yet.

After I bent my trim, I saw a sample of Azek material at the BORG.

The factory rep had used silicone blanket heaters to heat an 8' piece of 1" x 2" Azek. He then twisted about 8 times and then tied in a knot.

He had also bent a piece of 1"x4" into an arch with a radius of about 18" (on the flat - if that makes sense).

The BORG millwork guy said that Azek recommends no more than 10% Azek trim for interiors. He guessed that it had to do with dangerous off-gassing in case of fire.
