I saw this post and thought it was a good idea so...
Project is to make the shadow profiles of my daughters out of veneer as a birthday present for my wife. I got started by wondering how I could use the 12x12 1/2" thick MDF cutoffs I had. I also want to do some hand tool woodworking and this is small enough to be doable but still challenge me.
There are no plans, I am winging it. Current dimensions are 12x12 but will probably end up smaller. I picked walnut for the shadow and maple for the background because that is the veneer I have. I will edgeband probably with walnut but thought about zebra wood. I will see later after the veneer is glued up.
Progress so far is I printed profile pictures of my daughters, taped them to the walnut and cut them out. Then I made a lot of mistakes trying to bookmatch the maple and ruined several sheets of veneer. Then I made even more trying to cut the profile into the maple background. I am going to see if the oak I have is thinner veneer that will still contrast with the walnut and is easier to cut.
I will try to have pics up this weekend or next week.
