    What Kind Of Joinery?

Saw this on the back cover of a catalog at work. Thought I might build a couple but it's hard to tell from the picture what kind of joinery is used.

    http://www.westelm.com/online/store/...tId=tree-stump

Can't believe someone would pay $200 for a stump! Catalog said they are Cypress, wonder how much they would want for Walnut of Oak? I have a some sized Mesquite logs...

From just a quick look, it appears that the vertical pieces fit the top piece and are surface mounted. But, it could be an actual complete stump that the vertical lines are created with a router after debarking.

The catalog showed several in the room pictures. If you click "View in a room" it shows a different one. I think the lines are just the way the log checked as it dried and that one was used for the pictures because of its clean appearance.

Geez, with a bit of sanding I believe I have some $200 "side tables" out in my woodshed.

I like how the description notes that it's "Fully Assembled"

I believe folks who buy such things are those that I classify as "more money than brains."

One of my old offices has one of thise. It's just a sanded log. The cracks are natural.

Try this one on for size

Me too. Maybe I won't keep giving all the larger pieces of firewood to my dad...

                    Between this

and some pieces from the pile I figure I can get 10 or so. Mesquite that big is rare so I figure they should be worth at least $300-350 a pop!

Partially assembled is more. You get a seedling, a chainsaw, and told to wait x number of years.

We had a woman in our shoping center, that sold and did interior decorating. I got to see her bill one time when something got "damaged" in shipping by UPS. $500 for twigs that were dried and tied together.

Some people have more money then sense.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

                        what kind of joinery?

Pappy, from the picture...it looks as if someone cut off a piece of a log,
skinned the bark off of it, and cut some vertical slots into the blank and then
sanded it smooth cut make it appear like it was something special when it wasn't. Definately not worth $200.00 to me.... eezlock

Sent the links to my wife....have an old black walnut that needs to come down....look for our new eBay store coming to a browser near you soon. I'll have coaster slabs, wall slabs, end table stumps and I might staple some greenery on a few when the holidays start again.

Boiling the pieces in Poly for a few days and letting them dry might bring out some interesting patterns...that'll be the "High-end" piece, very exclusive.
