    satin poly finish

I am using a satin poly oil base and spraying it, I have used it before with no problems and have used it and had this come up before and can't figure it out.

When the finish dries it looks splotchy, I ussually use at least three coats giving it plenty of dry time and sanding between coats. I have used it sprayed and brushed and have had it come up both ways. Some times it comes out fine and other times splotchy. I mix it well, don't thin it, warm dry room, can't figure it out. Bad can batch?? Anyone had this before?

Could be just a bad batch, or some contamination of your application. It doesn't take much to invade the product. While spraying, could be something in the gun or the airline has carried out some moisture with some goo that can build up in the tank. The airline itself is a good trap for foreign matter. If you blew off the parts first, just the air alone could have affected the pieces. Check your filter and using one of those ball type final filters on the gun helps a lot.

I've never had that before, but recently I was poking around the MinWax website, and they have a forum there. Several other people had complained of similar issues. I didn't read thru all of it, but you might find some info there.

Thanks, I have had it happen when I brushed it on also, I sprayed the first two coats with glossy finish and it comes out clean and crystal clear but the satin sometimes is splotchy. It is minwax so I will check out the website. Thanks

Just read the Minwax forum on their wedsite, seems alot of others have had this issue. Seems as though the flatners in the poly are not mixing well, I stirred and shook the can a lot before using it and it didn't help, the clear glossy looked great only had problems with the satin. I think I will try a different product.

I'm not sure it's contributing to your problem, but I think poly should only be stirred, not shaken. Shaking introduces air bubbles.
