    Alternatives In Hardwood Sheet Material

Hardwood plywood that is sold retail at home centers is only usually available with a veneer core. That type has a core of veneer layers glued up with the grains running in opposition to each other in layers with a hardwood veneer face in different thicknesses. That's the stuff you usually see in HD that has the layers showing between the two faces.

Suppliers of different cored types of plywood carry hardwood veneer faced plywood with different types of cores like these.

Lumber core plywood or sometimes called "blockboard" is made up of solid lumber strips of wood glued together in widths of 1" or larger, running the length of the sheet, creating the core and having a hardwood veneer face. These are usually very flat and light weight. They also leave a wood edge instead of a layered or composite edge.

For the composite cores, they are heavier than veneer core and lumber core, but have a consistent and uniform thickness, and their jointing and screw holding properties are less predictable than veneer or lumber core material.

Has anyone tried any of these variations?

I've used MDF cores, carried at Menards. Used for building small speaker enclosures. The MDF is less resonant than veneer core. And I think it was less expensive, too.

I used LC recently on a project. While mine was very flat, it was not light weight by any means when compared to VC. Good stuff, probably about as close to perfect as you are going to get in a sheet good.

FC (fiber core - usually 48lb per cubic foot MDF) sheet goods are ok. I recently picked up 5 sheets of cherry from a guy who was closing his shop. I am using it for a closet organization project, though I haven't actually used it yet, so I can't comment on joinery. My thoughts on design for this project, considering the material I am using, have me simply thinking of how I would build this with MDF since that is pretty much what is happening. I believe sizing joint edges with thinned glue is very beneficial with FC.

For those interested in pricing here is a sample :

3/4" Cherry - Sequenced, Matched and Numbered - Cherry Back - VC $98.56

3/4" Cherry - Sequenced, Matched and Numbered - Cherry Back - FC $85.44

3/4" Cherry - Sequenced, Matched and Numbered - Cherry Back - LC $138.56

I have not used PBC (Particle Board Core) and don't think I every will. It's $3 sheet more than FC and I just can't think of a reason to use it!

I don't do the sizing thing. I get good luck with adequate glue and a good fit. The prices you pay seem a little high. Maybe the differential in your area accounts for that. Are you paying retail? Do you buy or have access to any distributors to the trade? The LC I get is considerably lighter than VC and at times it goes on special and costs less than VC. A lot of shops around my neck of the woods don't get into LC...I don't know why...I like it. The plain slice Red Oak in both LC and VC is gorgeous. The Mahogany and Walnut I get is VC.

Note that this is sequenced, matched and numbered. Just random numbers out of the book, single sheet pricing, no volume.

What is VC Walnut A-1 in your area?

Have you tried Mende Core? I used some MC walnut and it was awesome.

Haven't tried Mende Core. It's rare that I'll use composite board with veneer faces. I usually use either LC or VC, it just gets figured into the job. I won't be able to give you a price on VC Walnut until tomorrow sometime. Price varies quite a bit, as you know.

Ok, so my prices are decent. SM&N VC = $98.52 for single sheet.
