    Plywood Prices??!?

I wondered what people were paying for their plywood. I know there are lots of different grades, but here's what Home Depot has to offer.

    Red Oak 4x8 sheets:
    1/4 - $20
    1/2 - $40
    3/4 - $45

This is in California. Do these prices seem reasonable for the quality Home Depot usually carries?

    Thanks,
    -Pak

    Wow.

It's been more than five years since I was in a Home Depot but those prices are much better than around here in non-HD territory. The least expensive 3/4" red oak plywood I have found locally was during a grand opening sale for about $60.

I was once able to find a half sheet of 1/4" red oak, in a clearance bin, for $14.

Those prices seem to be in line with HD/Lowes in this area. Some folks really dislike HD/Lowes hardwood ply however I think it gets a bit of a rap. I personally find it to be hit or miss, however I am referring only to the veneer faces, not the core. The thing is you can pick through the material. As usual fresh pallets are better picking. If you don't see something you like then drive 2 minutes to the next big box store!

Now the big complaint a lot of folks have is voids in the plywood veneer core. I personally think way too much of a deal is made over this issue. So, 1 square inch of material is missing on 1 of 7 plys? If you are edge banding, face framing or mitering the cuts what is the issue? It is not going to impact the structural integrity of the joint.

3/4" A-1 grade sequence, matched/numbered veneer core plain sliced red oak ply is currently $68.80 at the "real" plywood store I use. I would not pay the difference between Lowes and this store for red oak. As a note, walnut, cherry, QSWO goes for around $90-100 sheet for VC.

I agree that for what their plywood is intended it's fairly priced for the retail market. It is not really labeled for furniture or decorative use. The markings for that would be first an alpha character for the face, and then a numeric character for the back, as you noted from your "real" plywood store.

Even the top suppliers of the best grades have bad sheets at times. I've had sheets that had layers of the core not glued sufficiently that weren't noticed until the sheet was ripped or crosscut. When you can look across the face of a sheet and see a large bubble, you know something is wrong. Sometimes just tapping on the faces can reveal stories about what's going on where you can't see.

Off the top of my old brain, I would say the prices in Anchorage are between $5 and $10 more per sheet. Reasonable quality stuff that, when covered with face frames, proves quite adequate for cabinets (as per Jeff's comments). I have also used birch-faced ply for drawer faces, with very thin edging strips.

The biggest complaint is that the 'good' ply (birch or oak) is incredibly thin and is easily sanded off if one is not careful.

            Regards, Steve

Am presently building some kitchen cabinettes for a friend. Using poplar for frames and 3/4" birch ply for outside. Birch veneer 3/4" @ $44 per sheet at my local Ace Hardware lumber store. No voids yet and faces with no blemishes. Figure that a pretty good deal!

My local HD has had 3/4" poplar ply on clearance for $20.00/sheet! (Before it went on clearance it about $32.00/sheet.) I have used their Sandiply and had nothing but grief! This poplar has 8 plys and very, very few voids. I believe it is made by Columbia and imported to the US from Canada. Although I have just used it for shop cabinets, it is really pretty nice stuff.

Not sure what I will do when it sells out. (I bought a couple of sheets at this price and they only had 10 sheets left! Wish I had more room for storage!)
