My father in law said that when he uses polyurethane, he sometimes gets what he referred to as chalking. I am not sure what he meant and could not offer a solution. Does anyone know what he is referring too? What is the reason for it? I told him I would post the question to try to get an answer. Any ideas out there? thanks.

Chalking is usually refering to a powdery surface that rubs off on old paint. Never seen it on polys, though.Don, aka Pappy,

Wonder if he's thinning it with too much water. Even though it's water based, you're not supposed to thin with much more than 5% water before you risk messing up the chemical balance.
Also wonder if he's straining the solid chunks out before applying.

I just about guarantee that he is using old oil based poly. Bet $10 it has been sitting on the shelf for quite a while and has made it through a few weather cycles. I have immense knowledge in this department! You can only guess how I know this! LOL!
Let me know if I am right.Comment
