    Anyone work with cane?

A future project will use rattan cane for door panels like in this picture:

    http://www.restorationhardware.com/r...016&navCount=3

I was going to buy the prewoven cane from Rockler but I don't know how to
work with cane. I was planning on a stub tenon door frame. I want the cane
to be taught in the frame so I probably need to use some kind of spline which
I can get at Rockler, too.

    Please let share your experience.

    Thanks,
    Paul

The description indicates "woven cane fronts". I'd want to check out the piece in person, but I'd bet that the woven cane is glued and/or stapled to a plywood back. Assembly at that point is the same as any other frame and panel door.

If the woven cane isn't bonded to something else, then I'd build those doors like this:

    1) Cut and rout the rails & stiles as you normally would.
    2) On the back side of each rail & stile, remove the overhang that would hold in the panel with a tablesaw.
    3) Pull the cane tight, and staple into place.
    4) Reattach the overhang that you removed in step 2 to cover the staples.

You may want to check out Van Dykes Restoration (www.vandykes.com). Lots of cane stuff, including rolls of pre-woven cane.

I think their prices are generally better than Rockler's and has a much more extensive selection of furniture restoration and parts.

I"m not using a cane yet, but it's only a matter of time.

        Oh. Er, ah, never mind.
