I started my first cutting board

    Day 1
After watching the pod cast for the Wood Whisperers cutting board, I decided to make two of them for my sisters for thier birthdays. I am making them out of Purple Heart and Curly Maple. Here are a few pics of the surface prep, dry fit and glue up of the first one. Dry fit size is 15.5"x11"x.75". More to follow.......

    Day 2
I removed the board from the clamps and cleaned it up with the planer. I then cut it into 7 strips the same widths. The board was dry fit before final glueing and then glued and clamped.

A very nice design. I like it alot. Beats my cutting boards- I try to make them so complex they never get finished! haha.

    Great work, I'm impressed.

At first I didn't think much of the pattern (too unbalanced), but then I checked out the podcast and saw the finished product. I've been looking for a nice plan, so thanks for the heads up!

Very nice! Be sure to post pics of the finished project. They should be beautiful. Are you having any problems with tearout on the curly maple? If so, how did you solve that? I know it can be a bear with that wood but its beautiful stuff.

Thanks guys for the nice comments so far. As far as the wood I am not having trouble with the Curly Maple, I am having the most trouble with the Purple Heart. It sure likes to slpinter and I have a few stuck in my fingers today.

I hope to have time to unclamp it and cut into strip tonight to reglue the cross-hatch pattern. I will post more pics when that happens.

I have made quite a few cutting boards and you are right about the problems with Purple Heart. I finally started putting the PH on the interior of the board and not along the outside to avoid the splintering & tearout.

What kind of finish are you going to use? My recommendation would be to melt some bees wax in the microwave along with some mineral oil. Be really careful because the wax will be extremely hot. Use Pyrex container, not Tupperware. (Melted one once, what a mess!!!) Wipe the mixture on with some cheese cloth. Let is soak in overnight to get good penetration. I apply it generously a couple of times.

                  Should look pretty good.

                  Good Luck.

Thanks Bob, I was just about to post a question on finishing it.
