    50BF white oak

One of the guys here at work hooked me up with his neighbor who is selling 50BF of White Oak, all rough cut. He wants $2.75/BF but say he will make a deal to take it all. Do you think I would offend him if I offered him $100 out the door?

even $2.00 sounds high for 4/4 white oak. It's been awhile since I've picked any up, but the last time was $1.65/bf.
If it ain't broke.. don't fix it!!!... but you can always 'hop it up'

hmmm ... maybe it's been longer than I thought ... just checked Hearne and they're gettin' $3.50/bf

Red Oak at the guy I normally deal with was $2.00/bf the middle of July, and his WO prices are ussually a little cheaper for some reason.

He shouldn't be offended. Offer him 2 bucks and be ready to meet in the middle. That would be about fair to both parties.

Depends on where you live. Most PA residents are blessed - they get wood like manna , but not us in south FL. The cheapest unsurfaced RO here that I found is at $2.65 / bf. Of course, HD / Lowes carry it at around $6 / bf S4S.

I'd say $2.75 is excessive for rough cut, but $2 makes it even - not too bad for either of you. If you don't have a planer/joiner and he does, I'd pay him to surface it for you.

well, i just learned last night something. keep looking online at craigslist and you will see every so often ww shops/cabinet shops closing or clearing out their stock. i just went and picked up 100 bf of hard maple for $140. if i had seen the guys ad like two weeks ago, i could have gotton all sorts of lumber.

$2 doesnt sound bad, but keep the pressure on. also, just keep looking at craigslist. i know i have to start keeping an eye on it from now on.

            good luck!

              For comparison in Ohio

The place I deal with in Wooster Ohio only has quarter sawn white oak that is kiln dried. They are at 3.20 a bf

Red oak starts at 1.93 ( 6 to 8 inch wide) to 2.35 for 10 inch wide prime

              all kiln dried.
              Cut twice.... measure??

I would check the board footage to see exactly what it is. Don't be shy about making offers...its your money. Try to do it in a nice way.

Is it quarter sawn or plain sawn? WO and even QSWO are pretty plentiful here, and subsequently goes fairly cheap in the rough sawn form. $2 isn't a bad deal for plain sawn if it's good lumber... it's a fairly nice deal for QSWO.

1" American white oak (Quercus alba) from my Canadian supplier:

                    $4.15/bf FAS or

                    $6.50/bf quartersawn

                    So $2.00/bf sounds good.

Depends on what you are talking about.

FAS, yes definately worth $2. Heck its worth close to what he is asking IF it is clear FAS. Start finding knots to work around and my price goes down quickly.

If it is QSWO then it is a heck of deal at asking price. For some reason QSWO is commanding a premium even here in PA. Walnut, Cherry and plane oaks are cheap but QSWO is high. Glad Dad gave me a big stack of it for my birthday!

Thom, you know better than to check Hearne for pricing!

My comment is not about the value of white oak in Pennsylvania, but about deal-pricing in general.

IMO, someone who is asking 2.75 per unit for 50 units of almost anything is expecting a counter-offer of $100.

Good point. At $4.15/bf I can go through their whole stock and reject 90% to get what I want. I wouldn't make an offer at all until I saw it all.
