    Treated ply for playground equipment?

    I'm getting ready to build a playground in the back yard. I'd like to use materials that will last, and I'm wondering if the new treated plywood (CCX?) would be good to use? My biggest concern if it's safe for the kids, with longevity being second. Will also be using treated 4X4s, but contact with that would be minimal.

      You could also use marine grade plywood. You can coat any exterior wood or plywood with a good exterior spar varnish.

          Keep in mind that any plywood will splinter bad along the edges so they all need to be covered. The chemicals can cause some real problems once inside the skin.

          If you are going to use it a deck/floor areas, I would be tempted to go with the engineered deck boards.

              Keep in mind what "lasting" means for back yard playground equipment. It means it has to last as long as the kids want to play with them. After that you'll be looking for a spot to put a pool in. Some playground stuff is age appropriate and sized. They are only that age for so long and the grow up fast!!

              A kiddie swing gets small fast. See-Saws give way to climbing walls. Bunnie slides get replaced with towering forts. Some parts may only have a life-time of one season and your child is ready to move on.

              It's worth quite a few dad points to make such a thing for your kids. I applaud your efforts.

              Also, it's always easier to replace something that rotted out then it is to wonder if year after year something is poisoning your kids.
