Help with a desk bookcase project

I want to build a student style desk with bookcases to fit inside of a closet space. I have to build the desk in my shop then move it to my sister's house to install in the closet. My dilema is which kind of wood to use that will be sturdy and inexpensive. I have three sheets of 3/4 inch MDF already sitting in my shop but if I am going to spend the time to build it I would like to use something a bit nicer than MDF. I don't have a joiner, but I do have a nice WW II blade on my BT3100. I thought I could try to glue some pine together for the desk. Any of you have a better idea?

For the bookcase part, how about plywood with some oak (or other) edge banding? You could use the iron-on stuff, or use 1x2 strips and make a lip, which would actually help prevent sagging over time.

I thought of plywood as it is very stable. My concern is she wants to paint it white and oak plywood would show too much grain. I have used the edge tape that stuff works great. Is there a type of plywood you would recommend that looks smooth when painted white with out having to fill the grain?

MDO plywood. It has a very smooth paper surface. It's used by sign makers because it accepts paint beautifully. You wont' find it at HD, but any lumber yard will have it or be able to get it.

But be prepared to pay a pile of money for it! Solid pine would be much cheaper. Baltic Birch ply is void free and may paint up fine. A couple of coats on the edges may be required. BB ply is pretty cost effective IMHO. You might also look to maple or birch plywood as those might also take paint better and might be found for a reasonable cost. You could use pine to edge the plywood to get a clean paintable surface.

I'm with Mark. Another suggestion would be to use the MDF you have for the table top and glue formica to the top. I did that with my DIL's desk and she loves it. Spilled coffee or my grandson's stray marker etc have no effect on it.
Also it makes for a very flat smooth writting surface. Pat
