    Kilz premium primer and pine

Hey all. I'm finally ready to paint the wainscoting i put up in the bathroom. The bead board is MDF (primed on both sides using regular primer) and the chair rail is pine. I need to prime the chair rail but want some advice and experience with using Kilz premium primer versus oil primer. I need to prevent tannin bleed through so would appreciate some advice. I do have some adjacent surfaces that are latex paint and I was told that you can't put oil over latex so that is why I'm considering Kilz versus the oil on the pine. Do you guys have experience with the Kilz premium primer?

    Thank you, Chadi

I would use Zinnser Sealcoat. It's dewaxed shellac. I 'think' that's the base for Kilz.

I've used gallons upon gallons of the water based Kilz and have had great luck as an undercoat / sealer. It goes on a little thin in spots on raw wood but I backbrush / back roll it in after a few minutes as it dries really fast. The oil base really smells terrible and takes quite a while to get out of your house so I tried the water based with the limitation stated above. It also doesn't come close to doing 300 sq feet per gallon as stated on the container. As an FYI, my 2 1/2 car garage took seven gallons on drywall, my shop cabinets, and some storage cabinets. Latex spreads like a charm after the primer is down and looks great as a finished room!!!

I have used Zinsser BIN Sealcoat primer successfully. It is shellac based and will not let the sap and resins from pine knots blead through your finish.

The Kilz latex is the only primer I ever use now. I've never had tannin problems on pine with Killz.

            Kilz premium primer and pine

            Guys,

Thanks for your input. I'm going to try the Kilz on the bare pine and put two coats to be on the safe side. I've used the zinnser primer before and the zinnzer tinted paint for my bathroom and had adhesion problems. I'll let you know how it goes and put up some pics of the updated bathroom. Thanks again.

Did you have the surface prepared? I've used both BIN and Kilz. They seem identical to me. No problems whatsoever.

I always use 2 coats of latex killz as a base. Lately I started using the zinser primer also. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between the two products once applied.
Never had a problem with bleed through or tannin with either product on all the pine trim I have covered.

                Good Luck with your project!
