I have kitchen cabinets in the house that I bought one year ago that have a LOT of unfinished MDF on the interior and tops and bottoms of the cabinets. I have thought of veneering the insides of the cabinets but that seems like just to much work. Also the MDF has shelf pin holes already drilled into them and covering them up would lead to further hassels. Also I want to keep the color rather neutral and in the same color range as the outside oak is finished in. oh and not white. What type of finish is recommended?

I would suggest Poly. It will protect it enough, and will not darken it much more than it is now. Don't think the poly will effect the holes much. Might have to "clean" them out a little when you go to use them. I wouldn't worry about it until you need to use those holes.Ric

If you ever get suckered into watching Trading Spaces, they go thru tons of MDF, making custom "everything". It always gets primed, and then painted.
I've used Kilz primer on MDF, and I like the results. Then, just top coat with a couple coats of your favorite latex. If the color is light, you may get by with one coat. But, I've always done 2 coats, and then I know it is a good solid color, and everything will hold up pretty well.
A roller works great for primer and topcoat, but you will need to brush too, to get into corners.LeeComment
