    Antique chestnut wood

Does anyone have experience working with antique chestnut wood?

We have an old barn in the family that will likely be torn down in the near future, and I'd like to use some of the wormy chestnut in a couple of furniture-type projects (bench, desk, etc.) if it would be worthwhile.

Any thoughts on feasibility or recommendations on staining and finishing?

    Thanks!

I don't have a direct answer for you, but these folks deal with alot of reclaimed wood, and they might have an answer...

I've not worked with it myself but......from what I've been told......get every board you can lay your hands on. It's highly prized beautiful wood. Could probably turn a dollar or two selling some if there is enough of it to sell. Pat

I have worked with it several times before - it is very easy to work with. A clear hand-rubbed finish looks great - I've used Formby's tung oil finish on it. Wet sand it by hand between coats. You will have to work the finish down into the worm holes.
