BS Boxes -- solid or glue-up.

In another thread there was discussion of using a solid block of wood, or doing a glue-up to make a block for the size needed.

I was wondering was some of the benefits would be to a solid block as it seems to me that all the same cuts would be required.

I like to stack the glue-up pieces in different ways to get an interesting pattern if possible, as shown below. For myself, I think the creation of interesting grain patterns would weigh heavier than cutting from a solid block, course I haven't heard all the benefits of solid block cutting yet.

The way one yard owner explained this to me, drying thicker boards (thicker than 8/4) is not as predictable. So you won't run into a lot of thicker boards to work on unless you mill your own lumber or make arrangements to have it done. Sourcing thicker pieces would be the obstacle.
