I bought some 8/4 rough sawn walnut from this place http://www.kmhardwoods.com/ I thought I could get 1-3/4" thick stock from it. Well after the first pass through the planer, I realized that the board is tapered to just less than 1-3/4" on one end. I paid $50 for 6.2 bf. Should I take it back, or just deal with it? what is exceptable?
Rough sawn, how much should I expect to plane?

How deep was the jointer pass? I have purchased 8/4 that has ranged from 2" full inches to sligthly over 1 7/8". If you bought it S2.. S3.. or S4 you have to remember that thet have already planed S3 and S4 down.
You should take a tape with you at purchase to know exactly what you're going home with IMO.

I wouldn't expect them to take it back after it's passed through the planer. 8/4 is a nominal measurement too, and not a guaranteed spec. The yield depends alot on the grade of the wood and the individual variation of the board, as well as your approach to dimensioning it. I'd think you'd be able to get 6/4" final thickness out of most 8/4" rough stock, but every board is different. Longer boards are harder to flatten efficiently. It's easier if you can shorten them closer to final length before dimensioning them.
The planer needs the help of a sled and shims to flatten a face...it tends to just make one side parallel to the other. That task is best done on a jointer if you have one. If you don't have a jointer, the sled trick provides a flat reference for the planer to duplicate.Happiness is sort of like wetting your pants....everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.
