    Problem with electric motor.

I bought a HF 3/4hp motor for use with a thickness sander that I am building. I wired it according to the instructions, but when I power it on it just buzzes. I can kick start it and it starts spinning but it only spins about half speed and still buzzes. When I kick start it even harder it will start spinning full speed and run smoothly. By the way, i wired it to run clockwise, but I can kickstart it in either direction and it will go. Also, I do not hav the belt on it yet if that makes any difference. Thanks

If it doesn't run right without a belt, it's likely to only run worse with one. It sounds like the start capacitor is bad or the centrigugal switch is stuck. Either way, I'd take it back and exchange it if you bought it new. If not, you should be able to replace the cap for a few dollars. And you can always spray the centrigal switch with WD-40 and poke at it with a screwdriver to free it up.

It wouldn't hurt to triple check that the wiring is correct either...

Quadruple check the wiring, it sounds like something wrong there. I don't think you should be able to run it either way if it is wired correctly......
The voices made me do it.

well, i wonder about the wiring too. i bought this as a floor model at HF about a year ago and just got around to using it. i looked up the manual for their 3/4 HP motor and followed the instructions. I wonder if its not wired the same. If not, I dont know how to undo what I did.

Alright, I went back to it and saw that there was a label on the side for where to attach each wire. I did it to the best of my knowledge (part of it was destroyed) and now it does nothing. It is a Chicago Tools Part No. 2028 3/4hp motor. If anyone has a picture of their wiring that I can use I would appreciate it. Thank you. -Shawn

Well, I cleaned up the label and saw that it said to connect the blue wire to terminal 1. I did it and it started right away. BUT! after about a minute it started to crackle, then pop, then smoke. It was still running when I went over to shut it off. I have no idea what I am doing.

Best to not let the smoke out b/c it's about impossible to put back in, and there's a finite quantity per motor. Wish I could offer more help...

well, I redid the wiring to the best of my ability and got it to start up again. The problem persists. Its running fine but I hear some crackling and see some smoke coming from the back. im gonna quit for the day. If anyone could give me a proper wiring diagram (using all of the colors) I would be extremely grateful.

and the answer to the problem is................................................ ...

                  Do not use 18guage wire.

                  works fine now.

sorry for all of the trouble.
