    purpleheart wood

    i have picked up a nice piece of 2X8X8ft purpleheart wood ,plan on using it for a fireplace mantle,im new to the woodworking world,and could use some info on finishing the wood!

    After all your machining and sanding is done, put it in the sunlight to get it to the color you want. (The UV rays turn the wood from brown to purple.) After that use a finish that will provide UV protection.

      To add to what Pappy said, it can sometimes take up to a week or so for the color to come back in the sun. Patience is the key. Something else I learned was that waterbased finishes seem to work the best to maintain the color. I did a fairly large shadowbox display case two years ago that is still holding the color very well. Use Minwax Polycrylic on it. Pat

        also, if you didn't already know. Purpleheart is very dense. Take your time and do any routing in multiple passes. It's beautiful wood, but needs patience. (sounds like my wife )
