    Slight gloat.

Well it isn’t anywhere the amount of wood that Ken and Ken just picked up but for me it is pretty good. What you see here is about 60 board feet of Cherry cut offs ranging in widths from 6 to 12 inches and in length from 4 to 5 feet. On many of these boards they have Heartwood on one side and mostly Sapwood on the other. Now I did not get a really great price on this stuff at $5.00 a BF but that’s not why I went after it. Most of the time cutoffs come from furniture manufactures that consider this wood bad. Cherry is mostly chosen due to its strait consistent grain and coloring.

I guess this is where one mans junk is another mans treasure as I love the stuff they consider junk. This stuff for example has awesome figure and colors. Some pieces show quilting while others have this really neat waterfall look. So we shall see how this wood comes together in a project or two.

Many woods (cherry and Walnut for instance) have a very distinct color difference between the inner heartwood and outer sapwood. With cherry, the heartwood is the traditional red color while the sapwood is pale cream (sometimes it's confused for maple). With Walnut the heartwood is dark brown while the sapwood again is a cream color.

Some people like to use the color differences as an artistic effect, others consider the sapwood "junk". Just depends on the phylosophy.

Many stores sell Cherry OFR (One face Red) or something along those lines. But it's important to know what you are paying for.

10BF of solid Red cherry will cost more than 10BF of OFR cherry and alot more than 10BF of cherry that has sapwood showing on both faces.
