    Daughter's dining room suite

Went to the sawyer's today to get the material for my daughter's dining room suite (Stickley/Mission style sideboard, table and chairs). I got a little under 300 bdft of red oak for $200. Most of it is 8/4 for legs and chair pieces, along with some 16/4 for table legs, and 8/4 for a table top 1 3/4" thick, 7 ft long and 40" wide. Came in the shop ranging between 18 and 22% moisture so it'll be a while before I get started.

The fun part of the trip was when I started up the hill from the guy's place and the entire load came out (my bed liner is a bit slick). Luckily Ken Massingale had his truck with Rhino liner so we loaded into his for the trip home.

The guy must have been nuts cause he let Massingale drive the Mizer. I stood well back.

That was a fun time, especially your face as you got out of your truck half way up the hill!
That dude on the Woodmizer looks like one confused individual!

Next week, we go get the White Oak, Ken, and you have to operate the WM., and I'll have the camera, hee-hee.

I was telling the wife about you guys and your lumber experience when she (who has everything negative I have ever done memorized) said, “didn’t that happen to you once with a bunch of wood for the lake house?” Sigh, yes it did with a load of 2X4’s. I had forgotten all about it but yes I had the truck loaded with 2X4’s and they were slick! No matter what I did they kept sliding about! Me and my son ended up losing half the load on a hill on the way to the property.

I do envy you guys though for one having a place to go to buy such wood and two for having a place to store it while it dries! I am looking forward to the project Ken.

Love the rustic look of the dining set Ken!
Happiness is sort of like wetting your pants....everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up w/ for the dining set.

How long will it take to dry out?

The log had been down for a couple of years and the lumber came into the shop between 18 and 23% moisture. I'm hoping it will be ready around the first of the year.

That's a great deal, Ken. It looks like it's going to be a fun project, but a big one! Those chairs will keep you busy for a while...

Ever thought of using some of these new-fangled thingambobs?

Can't wait to see the finished project!

Ken, all the best on this major undertaking! I'm sure you'll keep us posted on your progress.

I, too, am a big fan of the Stickley style. When my current project is complete, the home office is next and it will be all A&C.

For reference (and inspiration), I already bought Robert Lang's books. Also, American Bungalow magazine is an awesome source of ideas.

Probably being stacked AGAIN into the back of the truck. They are only 20 miles from home now. They should have it home by Christmas 2006.

Ken, you are NOT spending enough time in your shop! I can see parts of the floor in that picture, who do you think you are, Rod K? I picked up a bunch of Cherry a couple of weeks ago and was the first thing to go into the bed of my new truck. A rather fitting way to break it in I think. Anyhow, looking forward to seeing what you have been working on.
