    custom planter box question

After much consideration, I've come up with a plan to cap the stucco walls that surround my dining table on the deck. I'm in the process of building ~40 LF of planter boxes using my scrap composite decking and balusters. I think I'm leaning towards cement board siding for the base. Ultra-low maintenance is the key. It will make more sense when you see the model and picture below.

Now for the question: What should I line the planter box with? I'd love to find something I could roll on...like some sort of liquid rubber membrane. I also figure I could bend up some aluminum flashing...but it may be a pain at the lengths I need without a brake.

This picture is old. I've since installed the top rail with integrated low-voltage lighting... and we have furniture now. You get the general idea though. The stucco walls continue up from my shop below. The stacked pavers were from the now abandoned "Plan B" (or was it D?) wall cap.

They'll be built from a piece of composite decking with a dado'ed composite baluster on each end.

If you're using compsite material, why line them? Couldn't you make a watertight joint using silicone?

The composite "wood" still absorbs water (at least Evergrain does). I'm fairly certain I read somewhere that it shouldn't be submerged in water.

A light bulb went off after reading the "new trailer" thread. What about Herculiner? Should work...right?

Why not just get some of the pre-fab window boxes (plastic) and just insert them into the boxes? The plants should grow to cover them up.

What about drainage? You will need the water to go somewhere.

I've already considered them. I'll need quite a few, so it'll get a little pricey (~$120). Might be my best bet though. As for the water... I figure I'll just end up drilling a few drainage holes.

            Thanks for the help guys.
