    Poly question

I am planning to build an elevated feeder stand for my dogs out of oak ply.. It will hold their food and water dishes. If I finish the top with wipe on poly, will it provide enough protection from any water spills or dribbles? If not, what would be a suitable alternative? I have not been pleased with the results of spar on a previous project.

This one is from Red Oak finished with Watco Danish Oil, Golden Oak.
When the finish gets dogged up, I just wipe on a new coat of oil, let it set for a bit and wipe off the remaining oil. It has worked great so far. I figured poly would work fine but takes more time to fix what the pups mess up.

Thanks. I will search for that product. Your feeder turned out very nice, and I would not want to break into your house either.

Another thought, how about melamine. I've seen it in white and a sand or wheat color. That should clean up well with a damp rag. If you go with real wood I think the oil finish is the way to go.

I had used poly on a cabinet that occassionally gets wet. After 10 years of this the wood has stained in a few places where the poly failed. I don't know how many coats he used on it.
