I should know the answer to this, but ???

I'm making a desk for my daughter and am using Cherry plywood for the top, BTW, have you seen the price for 3/4" Chery Ply???

Anyway, because this is a top, and I usually use an oil finish, which isn't the best protection in the world for tops, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and use Poly.

The question is, will a poly top coat prevent the cherry from darkening as it ages?

To me, there's nothing like the five year old patina of cherry and I'd hate to not have this happen.

    All rational answers accepted.

    Mucho Thanks,

Bruce (losing my memory and my hair)

    No (rational enough for you?)

      Rational Answer (Not)

      Ray,

Thanks, you can always count on you Brits, even if you do eat fried fish wrapped in newspaper

Hey! Don't knock the Fish & Chips! Regular stuff every Tuesday night in the Kirby household. And in Oz, the paper is "newsprint" BEFORE it's printed on - so there!

I'm glad Ray gave you such a detailed answer

          Virgin Newsprint???

          Rod,

Is the newsprint stock recycled or virgin. I'd much rather eat off something printed on, you wouldn't want to see how paper is recycled, yet alone eat off it, even if you do live in a formal penal (no pun) colony.

          Bruce,

From where the water in the toilet spirals the "correct" way.

            Bruce:

            1. The paper is "virgin", not recycled (so they tell me).
            2. I hope you meant "former" not "formal" - nothing formal about Aussies
            3. I have much better things to do than watching a toilet flush

              2 things.

First, about the poly finish, generally I agree, but there are blends out there that UV protect, so check the label. They'll say it if they do it. I mostly use Arm-R-Seal anymore, which is oil and urethane.

              Secondly, mmmm......fish and chips.....mmmm.....
