    Pre chair repair

All right, so I was asked to pick up some stuff from Woodcraft this weekend for some chair repairs (typical mortise and tenon joints coming apart on legs). They asked for the use of my brad nailer to nail the tennons after injecting them, and I while I am unsure if it is small enough, I am really unsure wether they should do it with brads (or pins) at all. Is that an acceptable method, or will it expand at a different rate and cause more problems later?

    TIA

Were they saying nail from the back? Or nail across the tenon?

If the loosening has left debris on the tenon or in the mortise, it should get cleaned out. If that joint cannot be separated to clean the surfaces, get out what you can, check for fit, separate the parts as far as possible and coat or inject glue, and clamp. Allow for the joint to completely dry before use. BTW, all joints should be checked before fixing the most obvious one. In some cases when one or more joints come loose, it allows one of those to get much worse.

Nailing cross tenon, I have seen some chairs pegged before, but never nailed. Finally getting to reply, long week so far.

I can see cross pinning, as it's much like pegging a tenon, but you'd probably need to predrill, and you could accomplish the same thing using all wood. Were they recommending this as a reenforcement of the joint? Or was it so eliminate clamping??
