Sculpted Rocking Chair Class - Day 4

Another busy day today.

I started the day by cutting out my front and rear legs. I don't know if you can make out the grain pattern on the rear rocker but it's the reason I choose this shape.



We then cut the crest rail to size. No joinery yet and it's just clamped into place.



Joinery on seat was nice and snug so I cut the seat to size.



After that, we shifted focus to the arms. Joinery is done with 1/2" dowels. You can see the dowel holes here.

And the dowels cut to size and inserted. I used mahogany dowels in case I mess up so it would not show as bad.



Here are the arms mounted to the chair.


Joinery was nice and tight so I bandsawed the arms to the paddle shape.

Then we hit the arms with the grinder. I'm using a little Dewalt 4.5" angle grinder with coarse grit. Marc demo'd the process using his monster Bosch 7.5" grinder. That thing is a real monster . I'd used it in a previous class and it ate me up in 2 minutes. Anyway, the arms still need a little more gringing to even them and also I need to shapre the front hand-hold area.

And my rockers came out for the form tonight. I'll grind off the glue squeeze out tomorrow. Don't you love that grain!
