For a chess set project I want to build soon (hopefully) here is my Idea:
Chesboard:

The board squares and pieces will be made from mahogany and walnut, with 1/8" strips of maple between the squares. The board would be wrapped in 1/8" walnut, and pieces of maple on the sides. (there would be butt joints). The board would then fit into a mortise and tennon frame made from maple (1.5" [or 1.75"] square legs, with 2" wide bookmatched rails (no castle-like detail on the board))
The squares would be 1.5" square, and the biggest chess piece 1"x1" (1/2" scale of the plans)
Does that sound like it would look good, and work?
