    Backin it Up!

    I guess with all the advice I have been giving lately I should be making something to back it all up!

    Nah, not really, this little table has been in design stages for about a month now and I finally got around to starting on it this weekend. Kind of funny how it goes though, it was all set and the design was pretty much in stone until I started on it. The Madrone Burl veneer I was using has some bark incursions on it and they were very brittle so I decided to use a different match than I had planed. The top was originally designed to be a long octagon shape with a 1/4” edge banding all around it but once I glued and pressed it things changed. See, I made the mistake of letting the wife see it! The conversation went something like this;

    Wife; Oh that’s real pretty I like that!
    Me; Yeah, now I just need to cut the corners off and shape it.
    Wife; why are you going to cut it? You will lose all that pretty areas!
    Me; But I will keep the focus in the center still and the shaping will look nice.
    Wife; I don’t think you should cut it, I think you should make it like the last one you did with the frame around it.
    Me; But I want to try this design! It will look good!
    Wife; I don’t see what’s wrong with the other way, I like it but hey if you want to mess it up and ruin it, it’s your wood!

    So as you can see it is still square. The top is Madrone Burl and the bottom is Japanese Beech. It is veneered to 1/2” Birch ply. Then I ran a 1/8” border of Bloodwood and then framed that in 1-1/8” Beech. The joinery is all spline’s using some Hard Maple and the corner spline’s are Bloodwood. This table will be a spindle table and it is being made to take the place of my TV tray as I like having one by me for just putting stuff on so I thought I would make a nice one. Well we will see about that because even though I already told her what it was going to be in the end when I mentioned it today she said “yeah, good luck with that!”

    Oh well….

      Looks beautiful. After being in awe of your woodworking skills for quite a while it's good to see that at least your "wife handling" skills are no better than mine

        Beautiful! But An artist has got to go with his heart and take the lumps. As she said, "its your wood". Go for your original idea! (I live far enough away that I can't get blamed. )

            Looks like it will be another beautiful piece, Kenneth. Can't help you with the SWMBO part, got my own issues with that!

              You did the right thing. Post pics when completed and we'll all say it would look better in a longish octagon shape. That will show her
