Is this taking woodworking too far?

I needed to put a network connection in the bedroom but had not wanted to go all the way to the box store for a wall plate. I already had the adapter so I decided to use a scrap piece of oak baseboard and make my own.
Some more sanding and it will be ready to finish.

Why doesn't the word 'planing' show up in my computer spell check?

Nope, seen others do this before. Lowes sells these kinds of plates for about $3-$4 each.

Hey. thats what I would have done. In fact, make a ton of blanks out of different woods now, so when you need them, you will have them on hand. Besides, you can make them match furnitur near them.

That's cool Salty, I've been doing baseboard in our house and did some similar things for in here. The previous owners just ran cable through the walls with no plates.....sigh...

Great way to use up scrap pieces and get some good out of them.

            No, that's not "too far"...

"Too far" is when you make 10 plates out of 10 different exotic hardwoods, so you can change them periodically for different looks...
...eight, nine, TEN! Yep! Still got all my fingers!

Nothing is 'too far' if you enjoy it and are satisfied with the results. I considered doing the same thing on my porch but decided the time investment for the outlet plates wasn't worth it.

Looks better than the big box ones! Are you going into competition with them? Custom built anything pays big bucks nowadays.

Do you honestly think people HERE will agree that you are going too far? We are all sick. We all think it is OK.

Yea, I guess I got the fever too!

Not doing a production of them though. There really wasn't much to it. I set the 3/4" straight bit in the table and set the height to plow out the back of the baseboard. Since I just did the end of a 12" piece it cut fairly even on the back. Then just rounded the other 3 sides and sanded it out.

All of the other plates are white and have recently been replaced when we moved in. This one will pribably be behind the computer desk and never be seen anyway. But I'll know it is there!
