Finally got to play with the Leigh!

Well I know it isn’t much but it is kind of a milestone for me as I got to finally got to use the new Leigh D1600 today! So its kind of exciting to me after all the fuss, muss and money spent to get to this point. I guess watching the DVD 10 times and repeatedly reading the manual on the plane rides helped as this was the results of my first attempt.

Now I can get on with my planed projects!

That looks great! When I bought my Rockler jig, I just could not justify the extra (lots of extra) $s for the Leigh. The R does a great job, and is fine for drawer frames - which is mostly what I will use it for..

But when you see what the Leigh allows you to do.... (sigh)

Nice fit, you should be proud.

That jig sure is nice, wish I had the $$$ for one as well.

Boy you guys do not know how expensive this one turned out to be! First the Jig was missing parts (7/16” Guild Bushing and 8mm Adapter) but since the box was factory sealed I felt it was Leigh’s problem not Rocklers. So I sent them an email and they said they would send me the parts and that was like 10 days ago. I got tired of waiting so I bought the missing parts from Woodcraft this past weekend. Funny now as I am typing this the UPS man just showed up with the parts! Talk about coincidence…

Anyhow then I decided I did not want to use my original PC 690 router that starts up with enough torque to turn over a Harley adjusts with the precision of a cheap weed eater and vibrates like a jack hammer so I bought a new PC893 router. Well the standard base did not come with a Collet plate so I purchased a new one of those. All together I figure this outfit has cost me about $582 before sales tax! PLEASE don’t tell the wife or I am in so much trouble! She is already convinced that the value of the contents of my shop far exceeds that of what’s in the house.

I first bought a really cheesy Craftsman plastic dovetail jig that I managed to melt the first time I used it (Don’t ask) then I bought the first PC Half Blind jig just before they upgraded it (never have used it, just sits on a shelve) so this time I decided to go all the way and be done with it.

Jim, actually I am kind of working on a design for a shoulder plane. How is yours coming? Where are the progress pics?

I know you said not to ask, but that does sound like one nice story. And also something I do NOT want to do!!

Went to a demo on jig cut dovetails Saturday. The fit on his was nowhere close to being as tight as yours.
