Porch Paint

Since a real shop is not in the forseeable future, I need to increase the size of my work deck. It is now 8x12 made from a 2x4 treated frame covered with 3/4 PT Ply.

Plan is to increase it to 12x16 with a 2x6 PT frame and maybe sister some of the current 2x4's at the joints in the plywood and cross brace with the rest. I don't want to go back with the PT Ply for the deck. Even with 16" OC joists, it bows under the weight of the tools and tends to lift at the joints. My thought is to use 3/4 T&G sheathing and seal it with a porch/floor paint.

HD has 3 options available:

Behr Premium Plus Porch and Floor paint. $23 a gal with 200-400 sq ft of coverage. Requires a primer @ $19 a gal. They also recommend using a cleaner before priming, even on new wood.

Behr Deck Plus stains. Available in solid color or semitransparent. No primer needed. The solids colors are Acrylic Latex, Semitransparent is available as either oil or water based. Cost and coverage is about the same as the Behr paint but no priming.

Glidden Porch and Floor paint. $19 a gal with 400-500 sq ft coverage. Available in either Latex Satin or Polyurethane Oil Gloss. Priming is not required and the prep for new wood is sanding only.

Right now I am leaning to the Glidden for both the costs factor and the reduced labor time.

Deck Job

In my opinion the solid color stain will give you the best coverage and longest wear. And it should have some UV protection for those hot sunny Texas day's.

Having recently done my own porch I recommend going to a paint store rather than HD. I used Kilz exterior primer and Sherwin-Williams Super Paint myself.

I have used the Behr Deck stains on a few decks and it has weather very well. Oldest deck coat is 4 years old and looks great. I use oil based.

I have to disagree a bit on the paint store theory. I am finding that the Behr products are some of the best on the market, from exterior house paints to interior paints to deck stains. I was in MAB, Duron and Sherwin stores today and their pricing has gotten absolutely out of line.

So much for the expertise in the paint stores. Between yesterday and today I checked with Sherwin Williams and Kelly Moore stores. At both stores I was pointed to paints that were either metal only or exterior metal/interior wood. What they did have was twice the price of the Glidded or Behr paints.

I was in the Duron store today and they had some deck stains, semi trans and color, for $18 per gal, $55 per 5 gal. Did not even come close to reading about the product but you may want to call one of your local stores. Pretty good price, esp for a paint store.
While I was in there some little old lady was screaming " $43 for a gallon of paint?!!!?!!? I can probably get it for less at HD." They just shrugged there shoulders and said she was right. I don't know what she had, but it was an off the shelf non-custom exterior enamel. My two quarts of interior enamel was over $24. That was what my contractor used when he built the house, so for exact match I am kind of stuck.
