    Sneak peak #2

Well I am pretty much finished with a lot on the plane. I think I went a bit crazy here with the wood. The wood is Quilted Jarrah with a small bottom section of Red Heart for decorative purposes. The knob area with the exception of the base is made from a single piece. I offset turned the knob on the lathe and yes I have quite a few nicks on my fingers and there was some blood. I then softened the transition between the knob and the base with my first attempt at hand power carving. I continued on with the handle and shaped and carved it. I thought the handle kind of looked like a snails head so I kept with that thought while working on the handle. It is actually quite comfortable in the hand.

The Knob section and the handle are attached with pins peaned into place and filed flush. The quarter inch cross pin is also peaned into place. I still have to make the lever cap but the brass for that should be in this week and then I have to make the retaining bolt. After that I can work on the iron. I applied sanding sealer to the wood but no other finish yet.

Its getting there I think. Maybe a bit over the top but I like it.

    Thanks for taking a look.

Looks great! I am doing good just to keep the iron in my planes sharp.

                Beautiful work, Ken.

That is VERY pale jarrah! All the Oz (native) jarrah I see, is varying shades of deep red.

Looking good Ken! How long is it and what width is the blade going to be? I started another infill this past weekend. First real work I've put my mini-mill thru. It was fun!

Well Jim the overall length at this time is right at 7-1/4” from tip to tail. The blade is a 1-3/8” Lie-Nielsen.

I love my Mini-Mill and my 9X20 Metal Lathe. On my Mill I have had to do some work on the cross slides to get them working smoothly. I am currently thinking that I want to add a power feed to the long axis. Guess I am just spoiled by the feed on the lathe.
