Workbench......progress ?

This magazine article said 3 days to build this workbench. I spent about 2 weeks working on just the top to get it to the point that it was in the last photos I posted ! lol Maybe it's weeks instead of days where beginners are concerned ??

I finally got the base constructed yesterday just to get back to working on it. Last night I got a lot of the panels cut that will make up the next section so I hope to have a good bit more to show by this coming weekend.

How is everyone else doing that's working on this same workbench from the Family Handyman magazine ??

I think magazine articles and TV shows use "Norm Time": i.e. they don't count preparation, setup, glue or finish dry time, trips to the BORG to get that one piece of hardware you thought you already had, etc. YMMV .

I was finished over a week ago, you slacker...Seriously, when I estimaguess how long a project will take me I double it and then triple it. In my case as long as I'm making progress I'm happy. Even though I don't have much shop time, I tend to make more mistakes when I hurry, so I goes real slow.

Steve, nice looking. My workbench (just completed yesterday) was, according to the magazine, a "weekend" project. I think it took me over a month to 6 weeks to finally get it finished and since it's finished, I see a few problems with it. But it will do.

Again, yours is looking nice.

These time estimates for projects are correct IF you've already done the project once or twice (very recently), and have all the parts in front of you.

I'm just checking in,.and I'm glad to see an update on your progress. The base looks great! I just finished trimming the base carcass and I'm beginning to build the drawers.

I agree with you on the time thing. While I haven't been really keeping track, this has to be somewhere around week 4 for me. I haven't really minded though -- as it's given me a great opportunity to learn new skills (and buy new tools ex. PC finish nailers & compressor).

That said, some of the time spent has been covering up or correcting mistakes. Taking the extra time to ensure that your boxes & drawers are perfectly square before you glue & screw can save you some headaches further down the line. Oh well, rookie mistakes. They haven't messed me up too bad.

Not trying to threadjack, but I take it this is from an issue a few months back?? Or is it an issue I could possibly still find at a large bookstore chain. I would be interested in seeing the workbench plans. Being a newbie, I don't have a feel for what some of the better magazines are yet... Is this one of the better publications?
