I've done a good bit of pine work for my folks cabin. Most casework like bookshelves, cabinets, etc. I always made sure to use a prestain conditioner. Helps keep things looking even. Then I've stained with one coat Minwax Puritan Pine. Gives that nice amber aged look I like on pine. Seal with poly or something that fits your application.
Good luck.

Mark: Minwax Puritan Pine was one of the colors I was considering. As for the preconditioner, I've had mixed results using it. What I like best is to do a wash using 3 parts thinner to 1 part stain, rub it on like washing your car with no particular attention paid to eveness. Let sit for 24 hours, then apply full strength stain. I've had good results so far. (Not my own formula, got it from another forum).
Ken: great looking cabinet, but I'm looking for something darker.
