    New project request

My daughter saw the desk below and requested me to build her one. I think it looks do-able. I have a plan for everything except for the legs. I think the legs will end up being 2"x2"x29". I'm not sure what to contruct the legs from.... Was thinking that maybe I would laminate poplar togther to make up the thickness. I don't know where I would find stock this thick. Any suggestions?

I am in the middle of doing a poplar leg glue-up tonight. The easiest that I can think of is just use three 3/4" thick pieces and go with a 2 1/4" square leg. If it has to be exaclty 2", just rip a 1/4" after gluing.

        Crosscut Hardwoods

down in Seattle! If they don't have what you need there is another hardwood dealer close to them off 4th Ave South IIRC.

If you are planning on painting the finished project then laminating several thinner pieces may be your best bet.

Thanks, I go for the poplar laminating. I'm not stuck on 2" so 2 1/4" should work.

Just my eye but looking at the stretchers and the flutes I don’t think the legs are 2” but rather more like 1-1/2”. I have made several projects with glued together stock to make the legs. I always try for pieces of wood with the least figure and I try to get each leg from the same piece of wood.

Another vote for gluing up the legs, especially if you're going to paint the piece as in the picture.

I looked up the website for Black_wallnut's suggestion of Crosscut Hardwoods: https://www.emersonhardwood.com/cchw...98621850867507.
Nice site, and they do list 12/4 poplar if you really want the legs to be one piece.

Glueing them up could eliminate any stress in the lumber that may want to bow the legs later on. If I was painting, I would definately laminate.
