    ply dissapointment at HD

Recently was in the BORG, looking at the birch plywood sheets.....Noticed it was not as nice as the stuff I bought in the past....Upon closer examination, I seen the dreaded ``made in china`` stamp on the edge.....
I just walked away, discusted. Shame, in this country, ya caint buy decent plywood even, without it being made in china.\
I will check out some other stores, surely someone must carry quality plywood in birch..........

Lowes has some that looks to be pretty good, but you have to get the entire sheet. You might try the local cabinet shops or true lumber yards, but be ready for some attitude.

I just bought a bunch of the 2'x4'x.75" handy panels from Home Depot, and it's not up to stellar quality from two years ago. It's better than last year, but this batch were NOT exactly 2'x4' - more like 23.75"-24.25" by 47.75-48.25". Looks like there were selling it by the square foot (if it was fat, it was short, and if long, then thin).

I just bought a sheet of chinese birch today. Paid $30. The last sheet of chinese birch went into my router table. The inner plys are not straight but it does not seem to affect the thickness variation. There are not many voids. Overall, I consider it to be pretty decent stuff. I guess I would rather have birch plywood made on the continent with poplar inner plys but if it costs $10 or more extra per sheet, I am not sure I will pay it - at least until I have a problem with the chinese birch. If it comes down to chinese birch or birch with softwood inner plys, especially if the softwood inner ply stuff costs more, I will take the chinese plywood.

Attitude -- never understood why they continue to alienate their potential customers. That's why I usually don't bother with the little guy -- I have to drive across the city to get there, then they act like I'm an idiot if you don't know exactly what you need and where they have it stocked...

I'm working on some things with 7-ply Birch from Lowes. It isn't as nice as Baltic, but is nice wood for $30 per sheet. I couldn't find any good wood at HD either.

Getting ready to make bath and kitchen cabs and I will be buying my ply and hardwood from a local yard. We have an outfit in my area that has several stores around the State. They're big enough to not have attitude but still small enough to care about quality. Customer service is great and the quality of the wood is way higher than the borg. The price is only slightly more than what I would pay too so for me it's a fair trade off.
