Too Much Cherry Wood - Central Indiana

I have a problem. I passed a local gas station that was selling firewood and saw Cherry logs that were nearly 3' in diameter. This almost made me cry. If the people cutting it down would have made two cuts, they would have had a 34" diameter, 8' long log of beautiful Cherry. Anyhow, they are mostly 32-34" diameter half moons 15-16" tall, with 10-15" depth. I thought these would be great for turning. I made and offer and he countered and I agreed. So now I have about 1000 pounds of Cherry (this isn't all of it, I have to go back for about 3/4 of this amount more).

    So, who needs some Cherry?

My goal is to come close to break even. I just didn't want people burning stuff that really should be turned into lathe wood or small box wood. Anybody want some at a fair price?

Also, they have up to 18" diameter white oak logs that look pretty good too. If anyone is interested, I can connect you with them.

First that they didn't leave it as a trunk

That I never find these deals. A former neighbor, bought a GARAGE (only single car) FULL of rough sawn walnut, for $25.00, Bought a plainer, used some, plained it all, paid for his new tool and still came out great.

    Your almost gloating
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

I know the feeling. Earlier this week there was a posting on Cragslist for free Mesquite. Single trunk split in half, 9' long, 24" diameter. All I found when I got there was the waste left by a chain saw!

I'm cutting up the large logs I have and sealing them tomorrow. I haven't heard from anyone that wants any, so I'm cutting it up for my use after drying and will be not getting the rest of the cherry, but picking up some 12" white oak logs for natural edges bowl turning.

Started cutting today. This is the first time I wish I had more power and cutting height on my bandsaw. The surface checking is gone after 3/16". I cut a sliver off after that 3/16" and there was no uniform break pattern (i.e. the checking didn't seperate the wood that far down.) I'm getting some nice looking 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" x 9-12" blanks. I'll be cutting some pen blanks at 1" square as well. Sealing the ends and now i just have to figure out where I'm gonna dry them.
