sprayer for applying wood stain to a fence

Which of the following sprayers would you recommend for applying wood stain (Olympic wood sealant) to a wood fence (about 250 boards).

    Wagnus airless sprayer:

    pump sprayer:

hvlp spray gun (assuming you have a compressor)

If you're considering the HVLP gun, you should have a compressor with the CFM requirement to sustain constant delivery. I've used a pump sprayer, and they work very well for what's involved. The Wagner gun being electric would be the best of the three for that application, IMO.

The problem with the Wagner gun is the weight. They can be very tiring to use for an extended time. Plus the cup will need constant refilling unless you use an extension tube in a paint can.
For the price I would use the HVLP sprayer, if the compressor can't keep up I would then get the pump up one, provided it can handle the viscosity of the stain, a plus would be if it had a shoulder harness.

I'd go with the HVLP, IF you've got the compressor to handle it. I don't care for the Wagner, but then I haven't tried any of the newer models, so my experience may well be outdated.

Just with the Wagner's that I have used, there's a tremendous amount of overspray and they are rather noisey and harder to clean; but, it's been awhile and like all things improvements hopefully have been made.

When I did my deck a couple of years ago (25 x 18), I used a C-H siphon-feed gun with my 33-gal, 150 psi Craftsman oil-less. I did a great job, but the "overspray" was problematic near the house and required some "shielding".... but the job went very quickly and used a lot less stain than doing it with a brush. An HVLP would definitely be the tool the next time I do this, which is probably going to be next spring!

You can find this one , http://www.harborfreight.com/profess...kit-93312.html , on sale at HF on occasions for $39, I have painted several homes, fences as well as stain for projects with this very gun, works well, light and easy to use, can use a regular pancake comp. to power it.Just a good overall gun to have around.

I have used the one Tommy linked to stain a fence and do some paint work on the house.

When I built the pony barn, we bought the Wagner to paint it. Works much better than the older Wagner sprayers.

I've had some success with the Wagner, but it's loud and tends to drip. I've got a brand new HF HVLP sprayer I bought on sale last year, but have yet to try it....soon, very soon though!
