    Bookcase/cabinet

This project is what got me coming around here. We had an old sink base cabinet with shelves above it in a nook at the end of the living room. My wife was going to pay a guy to build a bookcase--so i told her i'd do it. Too many shipments from e-bay, Rockler, and others--along with a few CL pick-up runs and hours reading this forum...here it is.

The first few pics kind of show the space we had to work with. The sink base had been replaced with the new cabinet by the time we started to document...

    continued...

LOML had her heart set on papering the back wall with maps (our computers and such are at that end of the room), so i went to the basement and dug out some old National Geographic inserts that she selected from--i have to say that it really came out better than i expected.

The shelving frame was built separately from the base. Using 1 x 12 for it, i jointed a 1 x 6 to the bottom with glue and dowels to serve as the top of the base. Lots of mistakes--defiintely not square--but in all came out pretty fair for a first time project. And LOML is very happy!!

The final pic..cutting the doors i crosscut through a knot without knowing it. Threw one piece of 1 x 12 on top of the other--and then showed my bride how much love went into this project!!

That came out great. Nice planning. The map is a nice touch. Maybe make a little display piece with the heart. That was unexpected I bet.

I also like the use of the map as a back drop. Really adds something to the overall visual appeal. Ditto on making something from the heart, if you still have it!

The heart meets as a pair of doors--but the halves are together as a whole!! LOML had a great eye with the maps, i'd have never had that kind of vision. Fortunately she does the same thing with food!!

That looks very nice, I like it painted white, and the map as a backdrop
            was unique.

The food comment made me laugh, a true woman of vision.

I open our refrigerator and see bologna and cheese...she sees bolagnaise and a spinach salad. Definitely different vision!! At 4:30 yesterday i got a text saying she didn't know what was for dinner. Got home an hour later to find chicken breasts steamed with broth and garlic, covered with a white cream sauce, ziti and spinach. Sauce was created on the fly--sort of an alfredo, but not really--it was awesome!!

                    The Durability

The Durability of such cabinets is depend on the quality of wood and anti insect agents used for making cabinets.
