    Latch for Sliding Door?

My woodshop is part of my garage with a dividing wall. In this wall I made a 6foot wide door. I am going to put a surface mounted door on the wall. (Like a barn door.) Where can I find the knob/handle latch mechanism for opening the sliding door from either side? Phil

I was just looking through some hardware for a different type of doors I just installed in my new shop. They are 4' by 7', but not sliders. One door has barrel bolts top and bottom while the other is the normal doorway. After looking through different types of hardware, I just went with the quick and dirty hasp method for locking. I have a heavy duty spring I will use as a door closer. I know it will need some sort of latch, but I just plan on making my own. Shaped kinda like a horse shoe. Just pivots in the door and latches into a receiver inside and out. Should work fine for that.

You can make your own as well or check out McMaster Carr. They have many types of hardware for residential and industrial door installations.

I built a pocket door in my house some time ago. You may want to look for some pocket door hardware, although pocket door locks are usually fancy and not heavy duty.

Something like this? (I found it Googling for "barn door latch")

          Latch?

Lee, it sounds like you ran into the same problem. A sliding door is not a hinged door. So the barn door latch that Bob posted would work fine for a hinged door but not a slider. I have even considered using patio door hardware. My thinking is this latch has to swing clockwise to catch a plate/rod on the door jam. I don't want some chinsy hardware. I feel my tools need more protection than that. A keyed latch would also be nice. Maybe I am asking to much! Somebody had to have already created this: but where? Phil

Following one of the earlier links, I found this:

This looks to be exactly what you are asking for.

Have you tried Lee Valley, leevalley.com
              Go to their "Hardware" section.

              They have most everything.

Assuming that a lock is not necessary....
A notched bar with a pivot at the other end is fastened to the door with the notched end extending beyond the door edge. When closed the end of the bar slides up and the notch drops over something. There is a slot in the door and a dowel attached to the notched bar extends through the slot, lifting the dowel releases the notched bar and allows the door to slide open. The dowel is not fixed in the notched bar but can be removed and hangs on a string on the outside of the door or perhaps on the door jam. When the dowel is removed the notched bar can be rotated up and out of the way of the opening.

To close the door, slid it closed and the notched bar engages and the door is latched. To open from the inside just lift the bar and slid the door. From the outside you insert the dowel and lift the bar, then slid the door.

                Hope this helps

                Bill

I added one to a shopping cart just to see the price. At $108 it should be strong. Wonder how well it would stand up to being used on an exterior door?

Thanks jaybee for that link. It looks like some nice hardware. Thanks MR BILL for your instructions. I might be able to rig that up with hardware I have. Phil
