If I Have No Leaks I Will Be Amazed

Installing the water filter today. I wanted unions so I could take the thing out if I need to. I also wanted PEX, my existing plumbing is copper. As a matter of pride and cost, did not want to use the shark bites. So... soldering what I can in the shop. This means soldering the threaded nipples for the filter to 1/2 the union, soldering the pex transition to the other half, soldering the pex transitions to the new ball valve. Soldering the transitions to the unions has me worried. The joint was a little sloppy to start with. Unfortunately, no way to test it until I get it installed and under pressure.

Did you install a shut off on either side of the unions? An after thought would be to also install a by-pass at the filter so you could keep the whole system going when you need to do filter maintenance. Good luck on system start up.

      I Am Amazed

No leaks! I put a shut-off on one side, mostly because the shutoff for the house is 30yrs old and I've had them spring a leak if they are that old and you touch them. If I ever wish I had one on the other side I can cut into it and add one for PEX that takes crimp rings. The filter has a bypass mode on it already. Oh, and didn't have to make any trips to the store for missing parts, either. This plumbing stuff is not so hard. Yes, that brown stuff is my well water. Blech.

ya, you are going to want a valve on the hose side of the filter or it's gonna get a bit damp when you take off the filter & the water from the piped & the water heater start to drain back ..

By the way, with all that sediment, I hope you are draining the sediment out of your water heater on a regular basis, or it will have a short life.

True statement... Everything at a higher elevation than the filter will want to back-syphon when you open the canister. You could also use a small check valve downstream, but a shutoff valve is more positive.

We'll see. The filter has a 3 position valve, by-pass, filter and off. I am hoping 'off' means it doesn't let water through either way. I am thinking it doesn't.

Easy enough to test that theory...
