    Ideas for a dog door?

    I need some ideas here.

We just got a "puppy" for the kids. She's pretty well trained already but has occasional accidents if we aren't home or don't pick up on her signals quick enough.

I have a 32" full-lite door going to the back yard, so I'll have to replace the door to put a dog door in. That looks like it will cost ~$400 to do it right. There's a sliding door in the MBedroom but the wife won't go for something there.

I'm wondering what crazy idea some of you have that I would never come up with on my own.

    1. You could have a glass place cut a hole in that glass door and put a dogie door in there.

    2. You could cut a new dogie size door opening through the wall and trim it out like the full size doors in the house. complete with a door to block it when you want to keep the dog in or out of the house.

    3. You may wish to consider a door that only opens for you dog too. RFID DOG DOOR

That full-lite door could be modified, rather than replaced... Knock out a couple of the lights at the bottom, and replace them with a panel with an opening sized for a standard doggie door. It's probably gonna be a lot cheaper than that $400 price you mentioned to replace the door. Remember to size the doggie door for the full-grown size of your puppy.

The problem with modifiying the existing door is it's a single dual pane (does that make any sense?) Rather it's 2 solid panes with the lites laid over it, not individual panes in each lite.

Lowes has a fiberglass half window w/blinds and panels that will match the rest of the doors for $250. But that requires complete replacement, painting and a dog door. And also cutting a hole in a perfectly good door that I just paid for.

I've brought up the in wall idea with the wife, she didn't like it. But we door plan on replacing the patio door with a slider or french doors some day so the hole wouldn't be permanent.

Ray in the UK told of getting a double pane storm door with a hole cut in it. Seems it was cut before being tempered and then sealed up. He has a round cat door in his. Perhaps you can get something like that or just divied your door into a upper and lower section with the dog door in the lower with glass on one side and the door on the other side.

Or, just teach the dog how to open the door it's self.
