    Toilet Help

Sorry about the title, but I thought I'd be direct. Can an ordinary toilet be fitted with a "power flusher", or "pressure assist", or whatever they're called?

There is always the old fashioned power assist.

IIRC (checked it out a few years back) some can, some can't. It was the price of the upgrade kit that made me freak...

Some can be, but toilets and tanks are not standardized that I'm aware of. We're in the process of replacing two upstairs toilets. I picked up a pressure assist Mancesa Cyclone 4 from Grossman's Mr. 2nd Bargain Outlet for $120 a few weeks ago...it has a Sloan Flushmate system. It flushes impressively, but still won't take down the oversized single masses in a single flush....matter of physics I guess! You can also pickup an American Standard Cadet 3 from HD or Lowes for ~ that price but those are gravity assist and just use a larger flap. The Am Standard Champ 4 is supposed to have the largest inlet and outlet of any, and scores 1000 in the MAP test....I'll let you know how that one does in a few days....HD $188...$169 from Lowes with a price match.

This particular toilet is one I replaced about 10 years ago. It's a low volume flush. When I was setting the tank, I noticed a very rough waste line, like a mineral build up. It looked like it needed a three stone (or rougher) hone. The toilet has been backing up about 3 times a week. Last week we had a plumber in and he augged (sp?) out the toilet, changed the flapper and fill valve.

Now it does a fairly good flush, but has a secondary flush. To me it says the water isn't leaving the bowl fast enough, and the tank fills the bowl for a secondary flush. It still backs up.

I'm just about ready to call Roto-Rooter to do the waste line.

Take a 3-gallon bucket, nearly full. Pour it all at once into the bowl. If it looks like a normal flush, then it ain't your drain line. If it overflows on your feet, first get a mop and clean up. Then call a plumber...

A plugged vent can cause your symptoms.

I had a friend once who fixed his 'buildup' problem in the drain line buy pouring about 3 gallons of muriatic acid through the system. Smoked like a BBQ but he claimed he never had a problem after that.

I replaced all the toilets in our house with American Standard Cadet 3 units. They are about $130 each at HD.

I could flush one of my kids down these and have it not plug.

Put in a better toilet and be done with it.

They frown on that over at the D.C.F....

I had some absurdly rusty chains for my snowblower.

Left them soak in muriatic acid overnight.

Now there's no more rust, very little of the chains left, but no rust on the pile of scrap left over.

Next observation: My God the smell must have been fantastic
